Recently, I was speculating with a friend about ways to create a reliable, anonymous, distributed communication network that would allow better communication under the nose of dictatorial governments. It was a fun conversation, but then I clicked over to another tab in my browser and realized that it was pretty much irrelevant.
Because not being able to speak freely is a social problem, and it is solved socially. Chinese youths are using human brain power to create a robust system of steganographic encoding that can be overlaid atop existing censored networks to make them, effectively, uncensored. I don’t think I can compete with that using a custom Jabber protocol.
